Grit and Purpose: Clif Marshall on Finding God’s Will, Purpose & the Choices That Shape Your Life

In this episode, Sam Acho is joined by Clif Marshall for a wide-ranging conversation on faith, purpose, fitness, football, family, finances, NIL, college sports, discipline, and personal growth. They explore finding God’s will, the choices that shape our lives, athlete compensation, the transfer portal, and how much can change in a year.

Faith, Purpose, and Living in God’s Will

Clif Marshall reflects on turning 48 and the experiences that have shaped his understanding of success, purpose, and faith. After attending the funeral of his friend Dave Godula, Clif began thinking about legacy and the question of what people will say about us when our lives are over not simply what we accomplished, but how we loved the people around us.

Clif also shares a powerful story about praying for confirmation that he was exactly where God wanted him to be. Two unexpected encounters at the airport—including one with a Special Olympics athlete he had trained and another involving an NFL draft prospect gave him a renewed perspective on what it means to trust God’s direction.

Fitness, Discipline, and the Choices We Make

The conversation turns to fitness and the importance of discipline as Sam and Clif reflect on their birthday workout challenge. What begins as a physical test becomes a lesson in perseverance, focus, and personal responsibility.

Sam recognizes during the workout that he wasn't fully engaging his core. Once he made that adjustment, his performance changed dramatically. For both Sam and Clif, the experience reinforces a simple principle: the choices you make, make you.

They discuss the difference between choosing what is easy now versus doing the difficult work that can make life easier later.

NIL, College Sports, and Athlete Compensation

Drawing from his decade of experience with the NFLPA, Sam shares his perspective on the changing landscape of college athletics and the debate surrounding NIL and athlete compensation.

The conversation examines the Protect College Sports Act, player compensation, the increasing number of games college athletes may be required to play, and the physical risks athletes take on the field.

Sam questions why conversations about compensation can focus so heavily on players while coaches and other parts of the college-sports ecosystem operate without comparable compensation limits. He also emphasizes the importance of giving college athletes a meaningful voice in decisions that directly affect their careers, health, and futures.

The Transfer Portal and the Future of College Athletes

Clif brings his experience working directly with athletes into the discussion, highlighting concerns surrounding frequent transfers, academic credits, graduation, and what happens to athletes after their college careers end.

The conversation explores the tension between giving athletes greater financial opportunities and creating a system that also supports their long-term development, education, and career prospects.

Arch Manning, Commitment, and Personal Growth

Sam also reflects on the development of Arch Manning and how quickly an athlete's trajectory can change. The discussion becomes a broader lesson about growth and commitment.

A year can look completely different from the year before. Progress often begins when someone decides to fully commit, keeps showing up, and continues working even when the results aren't immediately visible.

Faith, Family, Football, Fitness, and Finances

At its core, this conversation brings together the five areas that define the Sam Acho Podcast: faith, family, football, fitness, and finances.

Sam and Clif explore what it means to live intentionally, make better choices, pursue purpose, serve others, and trust God with the results.

The message is simple:

Do your best and trust God with the rest.

Close Space, Not Give Space: The Mindset Behind Elite Pass Rushers

Close Space, Don’t Give Space: Ben Creamer on Performance, Faith & Facing Pressure What does training elite athletes have to do with how we handle pressure in everyday life? Quite a lot, as it turns out. In this episode of the Sam Acho Podcast, Sam Acho and Clif Marshall sit down with Ben Creamer, Director of Sports Science for the Washington Huskies football team and a longtime friend and colleague of Sam and Clif. Ben shares what he has learned from years of working with athletes and explains why great performance coaching starts with relationships. For him, the job isn’t simply about making athletes faster, stronger, or more successful. It’s about being part of their journey as they grow from teenagers into young men and learning how to balance that demanding career with being present for his wife and three daughters. The conversation also takes a fascinating turn into hand-to-hand combat and pass rush training. With a background in taekwondo, wing chun, judo, and boxing, Ben explains how Clif encouraged him to bring those skills into football. His approach is simple but powerful: close space, don’t give space. Instead of instinctively pulling away when an offensive lineman reaches for you, the goal is to move toward the challenge, control the space, and make the opponent react to you. Ben explains how repeated movements can train athletes to overcome the natural flinch reflex until their reactions become instinctive. That lesson extends far beyond football. Ben also takes us inside the world of **sports science**, explaining how GPS tracking, force plates, and other technology help coaches understand an athlete’s workload and physical response. But despite all the data, he believes technology should support good coaching—not replace the human judgment that comes from knowing your athletes. The conversation becomes even more personal when Ben talks about moving his family across the country, the loneliness that came with the transition, and a dramatic car accident where he pulled a man from a burning vehicle. For Ben, the experience became a powerful reminder of purpose and the importance of being present when someone needs you. Sam and Ben then explore **faith, fatherhood, approval, and grace**, including the pressure many of us put on ourselves to perform in order to feel worthy. Their conversation challenges that idea and points toward something deeper: faith isn’t about constantly trying to earn approval. It’s about relationship, presence, and understanding grace. From elite football training to fatherhood and faith, this episode keeps coming back to one powerful idea: When pressure comes, don’t give space. Face it. Because sometimes the way we learn to face an opponent on the field is the same way we learn to face adversity in life.
